How Much Does a Kenya Safari Cost? Real 2026 Prices

The quick answer: a quality 7-day private Kenya safari costs roughly $2,600 to $5,500 per person during the July–October migration season, and $1,700 to $3,750 per person in the quieter months (January–May), depending on your accommodation tier and group size. That covers everything on the ground — park fees, lodges, a private 4x4 Land Cruiser, your guide, accommodation and all meals on safari. International flights & Visas are extra.

Most "how much does a safari cost" articles give you a vague range and tell you to enquire. We're a Kenya-based operator, so we'll do something different: show you the actual numbers, including the government park fees everyone pays, and real package prices from our own trips.

What you're actually paying for

Every safari price — ours or anyone's — is made of six parts:

Activity fees — national park entry fees, community/conservancy fees, and optional extras like boat safaris and hot air balloons. These are fixed fees set by the parks and communities; no operator can discount them.

Accommodation — the biggest variable. The same trip can use a comfortable safari camp or an ultra-luxury lodge, and that choice moves the price more than anything else.

Your safari vehicle — a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, its fuel, and upkeep.

Flights — some itineraries swap a long drive for a light-aircraft flight (for example, Nairobi to the Masai Mara), which adds to the cost. Every price in this guide is for a fully-by-road trip — no flights, internal or international, are included in any of the numbers you'll see below.

Guiding — a certified, experienced safari guide who is with you the whole trip.

The small stuff — drinking water, snacks, picnic lunches on game-drive days.

The park fees, exactly (2026)

These are the fixed fees for non-resident visitors. They're the same whoever you book with:

Add that up for our 7-day route — two days in Amboseli (~$186) and three days in the Mara ($600 in migration season) — and park fees alone come to roughly $800 per person before a single night's accommodation. That's about a quarter of the whole Deluxe package price, and it's fixed. (Choose a camp deep inside the reserve, near the Mara River, and community fees add another $80 per night on top.) This is why a genuine Kenya safari can't cost $500 — anyone offering that is cutting corners you don't want cut.

Cost by trip length

Notice what happens to the daily rate: the 4-day trip costs $525 per day at Deluxe, the 8-day costs $456 per day. Shorter trips spend the same on transfers and setup but spread it over fewer days — and you've flown halfway around the world either way. That's why we honestly recommend a week or more: the 7- and 8-day multi-park circuits are where the value (and the wildlife) is.

How much does a Kenya safari cost for a family? 

Kenya is one of the best-value family safari destinations in Africa, because children get real discounts at every layer — park fees, camps, and our packages:

• •Children under 12 add only about $1,000 each to a 7-day trip — roughly 30% of the adult price.
• •Teens (12–17) pay roughly 50–70% of the adult price, depending on tier.
• •Park fees are lower too: under-9s enter the Masai Mara free; children pay $45 instead of ~$90 at Amboseli and Lake Nakuru.

The vehicle is private, so game drives run at your children's pace — early return for nap time, longer stops at the elephants, no strangers to negotiate with.

Family tents and connecting rooms are available at many of the camps we use — tell us the ages and we'll match the camps.

The hot air balloon takes children from age 5, at $400 instead of $480.

Why the price moves

Season. The Masai Mara entry fee literally doubles in high season ($100 → $200 per day), and lodge rates rise with it. July–October is the Great Migration window in the Mara — river crossings peak from late July to the end of September — so you're paying for the best wildlife weeks of the year. Travel January–May instead and the identical Deluxe trip costs around 30% less: $2,290–$2,350 instead of $3,270 for a couple.

Group size. A private safari's vehicle and guide cost the same whether 2 or 6 people ride in the Land Cruiser, so a bigger group drops the per-person price by up to 20% — you can see it in the tables above. Our honest advice: the Land Cruiser can technically take 7 guests, but we cap it at 6 so everyone gets a window seat — and 4–5 is the real sweet spot once everyone's luggage comes along too.

Accommodation tier. Same parks, same guide, same game drives — the tier changes where you sleep. Deluxe means comfortable, well-located camps and lodges. Luxury means the famous names and the views. The wildlife doesn't know the difference; your evenings will.

Honest ways to pay less

1. Travel January–March. Dry, excellent for big cats, the Mara entry fee is half price — and the same Deluxe safari costs ~$900 per person less than in migration season.

2. Make it four or six people. Two couples or a family group saves up to 20% per person.

3. Choose Deluxe, not budget. Below our Deluxe tier, savings start coming out of things that matter — vehicle quality, guide experience, camp location. That's a false economy.

4. Skip the balloon (for now). It's magical, but at $480 per person it's the easiest $960 a couple can save — and you can always decide once you're there.

5. Don't shorten the trip below a week. A 3–4 day safari spends the same on flights and transfers but gives you half the wildlife. Seven days across two or three parks is the sweet spot for value.
