How Much Does a Kenya Safari Cost? Real 2027 Prices

Updated for 2027 travel

The quick answer: a quality 7-day private Kenya safari costs roughly $2,450 to $5,500 per person during the July–September migration season, and $1,800 to $3,850 per person in the quieter months (January–May), depending on your accommodation tier and group size. That covers everything on the ground — park fees, lodges, a private 4x4 Land Cruiser, your guide, and all meals on safari. International flights, Kenya’s eTA and the mandatory inbound health insurance are extra.

Most "how much does a safari cost" articles give you a vague range and tell you to enquire. We're a Kenya-based operator, so we'll do something different: show you the actual numbers, including the government park fees everyone pays, and real package prices from our own trips.

What you're actually paying for

Every safari price — ours or anyone's — is made of six parts:

Activity fees — national park entry fees, community/conservancy fees, and optional extras like boat safaris and hot air balloons. These are fixed fees set by the parks and communities; no operator can discount them.

Accommodation — the biggest variable. The same trip can use a comfortable safari camp or an ultra-luxury lodge, and that choice moves the price more than anything else.

Your safari vehicle — a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, its fuel, and upkeep.

Flights — some itineraries swap a long drive for a light-aircraft flight (for example, Nairobi to the Masai Mara), which adds to the cost. Every price in this guide is for a fully-by-road trip — no flights, internal or international, are included in any of the numbers you'll see below.

Guiding — a certified, experienced safari guide who is with you the whole trip.

The small stuff — drinking water, snacks, picnic lunches on game-drive days.

The park fees, exactly (2027)

These are the fixed fees for non-resident visitors. They're the same whoever you book with:

FeeAdultChild
Masai Mara National Reserve entry$100/day (Jan–Jun) · $200/day (Jul–Dec)$50/day (ages 9–17) · 8 and under free
Amboseli National Park entry$90/day$45/day (ages 6–17) · 5 and under free
Lake Nakuru National Park entry$90/day$45/day (ages 6–17) · 5 and under free
Community fee — only for camps located deep inside the reserve (near the Mara River, Ol Kiombo area)$80/night$40/night
Lake Naivasha boat safari~$50 per boat (up to 6 people)—
Hot air balloon over the Mara (optional)$480 (from age 12)$425 (ages 6–11)

A note on Amboseli and Lake Nakuru: Kenya Wildlife Service bills these fees in Kenyan shillings at its own exchange rate, and adds payment gateway and card processing fees on top. In practice, that makes the real cost about $10–12 more per person, per park day than the dollar figures above. Our package prices already include all of this; we absorb these charges so you don't pay a cent extra. (Masai Mara fees are collected separately by Narok County and aren't affected.)

Add that up for our 7-day route, two days in Amboseli ($180) and three days in the Mara ($600 in migration season), and park fees alone come to roughly $800 per person before a single night's accommodation. That's about a quarter of the whole Deluxe package price, and it's fixed. Choose a camp deep inside the reserve, near the Mara River, and community fees add another $80 per night on top. This is why a genuine Kenya safari can't cost $500: anyone offering that is cutting corners you don't want cut.

Cost by trip length

The same tiers, priced across our most popular Kenya itineraries (per person, 2 travellers, July–September):

TripDeluxePremiumLuxury
4 days — Masai Mara$1,950$2,300$3,250
7 days — Amboseli + Naivasha + Masai Mara$3,100$3,600$5,500
8 days — Amboseli + Naivasha + Nakuru + Masai Mara$3,500$4,100$6,000

Notice what happens to the daily rate: the 4-day trip costs $490 per day at Deluxe, the 8-day costs $440 per day. Shorter trips spend the same on transfers and setup but spread it over fewer days — and you've flown halfway around the world either way. That's why we honestly recommend a week or more: the 7- and 8-day multi-park circuits are where the value (and the wildlife) is.

How much does a Kenya safari cost for a family?

Kenya is one of the best-value family safari destinations in Africa, because children get real discounts at every layer — park fees, camps, and our packages:

  • •Children under 12 add about $900–$2,000 each to a 7-day trip, depending on tier — roughly a third of the adult price.
  • •Teens (12–17) pay roughly 50–70% of the adult price, depending on tier.
  • •Park fees are lower too: under-9s enter the Masai Mara free; children pay $45 instead of $90 at Amboseli and Lake Nakuru, and kids 5 and under go free

Real totals for our 7-day Amboseli → Naivasha → Masai Mara safari in migration season (July–September), for the whole family:

FamilyDeluxePremiumLuxury
2 adults + 1 child (3–11)$7,100$8,350$13,000
2 adults + 2 children (3–11)$8,000$9,500$15,100
2 adults + 1 teen (12–17)$7,700$9,200$14,750

The vehicle is private, so game drives run at your children's pace — early return for nap time, longer stops at the elephants, no strangers to negotiate with.

Family tents and connecting rooms are available at many of the camps we use — tell us the ages and we'll match the camps.

The hot air balloon takes children from age 6, at $425 instead of $480.

Travelling outside migration season? Family prices drop just like the adult packages — January–May trips cost roughly 25% less. Ask us for exact 2027 dates.

Why the price moves

Season. The Masai Mara entry fee literally doubles in high season ($100 → $200 per day), and lodge rates rise with it. Mid-July to October is the Great Migration window in the Mara — river crossings usually happen from late July to the end of September, most often late July to early September — so you're paying for the best wildlife weeks of the year. Travel January–May instead and the identical Deluxe trip costs around 25% less: $2,350–$2,400 instead of $3,100 per person.

Group size. A private safari's vehicle and guide cost the same whether 2 or 6 people ride in the Land Cruiser, so a bigger group drops the per-person price by up to 20% — you can see it in the tables above. Our honest advice: the Land Cruiser can technically take 7 guests, but we cap it at 6 so everyone gets a window seat — and 4–5 is the real sweet spot once everyone's luggage comes along too.

Accommodation tier. Same parks, same guide, same game drives — the tier changes where you sleep. Deluxe means comfortable, well-located camps and lodges. Luxury means the famous names and the views. The wildlife doesn't know the difference; your evenings will.

Honest ways to pay less

1. Travel January–March. Dry, excellent for big cats, the Mara entry fee is half price — and the same Deluxe safari costs ~$700 per person less than in migration season.

2. Make it four or six people. Two couples or a family group saves up to 20% per person.

3. Choose Deluxe, not budget. Below our Deluxe tier, savings start coming out of things that matter — vehicle quality, guide experience, camp location. That's a false economy.

4. Skip the balloon (for now). It's magical, but at $480 per person it's the easiest $960 a couple can save — and you can always decide once you're there.

5. Don't shorten the trip below a week. A 3–4 day safari spends the same on flights and transfers but gives you half the wildlife. Seven days across two or three parks is the sweet spot for value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about planning your safari

How much does a Kenya safari cost for a couple?

For two people on a private 7-day safari in migration season, expect $6,200–$11,000 total ($3,100 to $5,500 per person depending on tier), excluding international flights, the eTA and mandatory insurance. The same trip in January–May starts around $4,700 total at Deluxe tier.

Is a $500–$1,000 Kenya safari real?

Not for a private week-long trip. Park fees alone can exceed $700 per person in high season. Very cheap "safaris" mean big shared trucks, lodges far outside the parks, and rushed 2–3 day itineraries. If the price looks impossible, something you care about was removed.

How much does a 4-day Masai Mara safari cost?

From $1,950 per person (Deluxe tier, 2 travellers, July–September) staying inside the Mara at Fig Tree Camp, everything on the ground included. It's a real option if your time is genuinely limited — but note it's the most expensive way to safari per day; adding three days and two more parks costs only ~$1,150 more per person.

When is a Kenya safari cheapest?

April–May, the green season: our 7-day Deluxe safari starts at $1,800 per person (group of six). But it's also the long rains — beautiful and lush, with some soggy game drives. January–March costs only slightly more and the weather is dry and superb for big cats; for most travellers that's the smart-money window.

What tier is the best value?

Honestly, all three — they're built for different budgets, not different standards. Every tier gets the same private Land Cruiser, the same certified guide, and the same game drives; the tier changes where you sleep. Deluxe if the wildlife is the point, Premium for noticeably nicer camps at a modest step up, Luxury when where you stay is part of the trip itself.

Is a Kenya safari cheaper than Tanzania?

Generally yes — Tanzania's park fees run higher, so a comparable Tanzania trip typically costs 20–30% more per day.

Have Kenya park fees gone up for 2027?

No new increases have been announced for 2027. Masai Mara fees remain $100 per adult per day from January to June and $200 from July to December, with children aged 9–17 paying $50 and under-9s entering free. Amboseli and Lake Nakuru remain $90 per adult per day and $45 for children aged 6–17, with kids 5 and under free, under the Kenya Wildlife Service rates in force since October 2025. KWS also adds its own exchange rate and payment charges of about $10–12 per person per park day, but our package prices already include these, so you won’t pay anything extra. If any fees change before your trip, we’ll update this page.
