Kenya Safari Accommodations

Overview

Choosing the right safari accommodation is one of the most important parts of planning an African safari. Your lodge or camp is not just a place to sleep — it’s where you wake up to birdsong, watch wildlife pass by your veranda, and relax after unforgettable days on safari. It’s also where most of your meals are prepared and enjoyed, making the lodge an essential part of your overall safari experience.

At Marvels of Africa, we carefully select accommodations that balance comfort, location, safety, and authenticity. This guide explains the different types of safari accommodations, what to expect during your stay — and how we help you choose the right option for your journey.

Types of Safari Accommodations

Safari accommodations generally fall into two main types: tented camps and lodges. Both offer wonderful experiences, and the best choice depends on your travel style and comfort preferences.

Tented Camps

Tented camps offer a truly immersive safari experience, bringing you closer to nature without sacrificing comfort. These are permanent or semi-permanent structures made of high-quality canvas, set on raised platforms and fully furnished with proper beds and en-suite bathrooms.

Many travellers are surprised by how comfortable these camps are. Depending on the category, you may enjoy private decks, outdoor showers, and stunning views over the savannah or riverbanks.

- Tented camps are ideal for travellers who want:
- A closer connection to nature
- The sounds of wildlife at night
- A classic, authentic safari atmosphere

Lodges

Safari lodges are built from stone, wood, or brick and offer a more traditional hotel-style experience. They often feature well-appointed rooms, spacious common areas, swimming pools, and a range of additional amenities. While lodge rooms are not necessarily larger than those in tented camps, lodges tend to provide a more solid, permanent structure and a familiar sense of comfort.

- Lodges are a great choice for travellers who prefer:
- A more solid, permanent structure
- Comfortable shared spaces and on-site facilities
- A familiar hotel-style environment

Both lodges and tented camps can be found across all accommodation categories — from deluxe to luxury.

Safari Accommodation Categories

At Marvels of Africa, we group safari accommodations into three broad categories. Each category offers a high-quality experience, with differences mainly in comfort, design, and exclusivity.

Deluxe

Deluxe accommodations are comfortable, well-managed lodges and camps that offer excellent value for money. They provide all essential amenities and are ideal for first-time safari travelers or those looking for a balanced experience.

Premium

Premium accommodations offer enhanced comfort, stylish design, and often better locations within or near national parks. Service levels are higher, and the overall experience feels more refined while still maintaining an authentic safari feel.

Luxury

Luxury safari accommodations provide exceptional levels of comfort, privacy, and service. These properties are often located in prime wildlife areas and offer personalized experiences, elegant design, and outstanding dining.

Regardless of category, we never compromise on safety, cleanliness, or quality of service.

Location of Safari Accommodations

Safari lodges and camps may be located inside national parks, within private conservancies, or just outside park boundaries. In many regions, especially outside peak migration months, the difference between staying inside or outside a park is often minimal in terms of wildlife viewing, as animals move freely across these landscapes and are commonly found beyond park borders as well.

Properties within parks can offer quicker access to core wildlife areas and reduced daily driving time. However, in destinations such as the Masai Mara, staying inside the park also involves an additional community conservation fee of approximately USD 80 per adult per night, which can significantly increase overall costs.

Accommodations located outside park boundaries often provide excellent value for money, with high-quality experiences, comfortable facilities, and strong wildlife sightings, particularly when paired with well-planned game drives.

During the Great Migration season, staying near the Mara River can be exceptionally rewarding due to proximity to river crossings. These properties are typically more expensive but can be well worth it during peak migration periods. For guests staying outside the park during migration months, full-day game drives are generally recommended to maximize time in key wildlife areas and make the most of the experience.

When designing your itinerary, we carefully consider seasonality, wildlife movement, park fees, and overall value to ensure the best possible safari experience for you.

Meals and Drinks

Most safari accommodations operate on a Full Board basis, which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meals are usually freshly prepared and cater to a range of dietary preferences when advised in advance.

Tea, coffee, and filtered drinking water are generally included during your stay. However, packed or bottled drinking water may be charged separately at some properties.

Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages are typically charged in addition to the accommodation rate unless you are staying at an all-inclusive property.

Hotels in Nairobi typically operate on a Bed & Breakfast basis, while safari lodges and camps are usually Full Board. We always clarify all inclusions in advance so you know exactly what to expect.

Power, Wi-Fi, and Connectivity

Many safari camps and lodges in Kenya operate on solar power, often supported by generators, to reduce their environmental impact. As a result, electricity may be available only during certain hours, particularly overnight in more remote areas.

Charging points (Type G) are usually provided in guest rooms or shared spaces, though power output may be limited. We recommend bringing power banks to keep essential devices charged during game drives.

Wi-Fi is available at most lodges and camps in Kenya but can be slow or intermittent, especially in remote regions such as the Masai Mara, Samburu, and Amboseli. Wifi Connectivity is generally in main lodge and common areas and not in individual rooms.

Mobile network coverage in Kenya varies by region. Safaricom offers the most reliable coverage, with Airtel as a secondary option. Coverage is usually good around major towns and in parts of popular safari areas, but can be weak or unavailable in remote conservancies.

We recommend purchasing a local Safaricom SIM card or eSIM, which is readily available at Kenya’s international airports on arrival, for the best chance of staying connected. That said, many travellers enjoy the opportunity to unplug and fully immerse themselves in Kenya’s wilderness during their safari.

Drinking Water and Laundry

Full Board accommodations provide a limited daily supply of drinking water.
All-Inclusive properties typically offer unlimited drinking water along with a selection of included beverages.

Marvels of Africa provides unlimited drinking water for all guests throughout their safari, regardless of the accommodation’s standard inclusions.

Laundry services are commonly available at safari camps and lodges. Laundry may be included in the stay or charged separately, depending on the property.

Rooms, Families, and Special Requests

Safari accommodations typically offer a variety of room configurations, including:

- Single Room / Tent
- Double Room / Tent
- Twin Room / Tent
- Triple Room / Tent
- Family or inter-connecting rooms / Tent

Family tents and family rooms are available at selected properties. These often involve an additional per-person supplement, reflecting the larger space, extra beds, and enhanced services provided. We will always clearly communicate any such supplements at the time of planning, so there are no surprises.

If you are traveling as a family, celebrating a special occasion, or have specific requirements, please let us know in advance. We work closely with our lodge partners to accommodate requests wherever possible.

Safety at Safari Lodges

Many safari lodges and camps are unfenced, allowing wildlife to move freely through the area. This is a normal and safe part of the safari experience.

To ensure guest safety:

- Trained guards escort guests after dark
- Staff provide safety briefings on arrival
- Simple rules are followed, such as not walking alone at night

Safari staff are highly experienced, and safety is always a top priority.

While safari accommodations aim to provide exceptional service, occasional issues can arise.
