Big Five
Lion

One of Africa's densest lion populations. Large prides of 10–20 individuals. Best seen on dawn drives when still active after a night hunt.
Best season: Year-round

Leopard

Solitary and elusive. Most often spotted at dusk in riverine trees or crossing a track in early morning light.

Elephant

Family herds of 15–100. Amboseli has the most famous herds in Africa studied and named individually since 1972. Tsavo's elephants are rust-red from dust-bathing.

Rhino

Both black and white rhino are present on your itinerary. White rhino graze openly and are calm around vehicles. Black rhino are solitary, more elusive, and one of Kenya's greatest conservation success stories.

Buffalo

Herds of 100+ near rivers and marshes. Large bachelor groups of older bulls are considered the most unpredictable animals in the bush.

Key Predators
Cheetah

The cheetah the world’s fastest land animal is one of Africa’s most thrilling hunters. In the Mara’s open grasslands, its daylight hunts unfold in under a minute, offering unforgettable sightings and exceptional photography.

Spotted Hyena

The Mara hosts one of Africa’s largest spotted hyena populations, with clans of up to eighty individuals. Highly intelligent and organized, these matriarchal predators are powerful pack hunters, not just scavengers.

Hippopotamus and Nile crocodile


The Mara River is home to large pods of hippopotamus occupying the deeper pools and some of Africa's largest Nile crocodiles individuals exceeding four metres are common, and five-metre animals are recorded. Both species are at their most visible during migration river crossings, when crocodiles ambush crossing wildebeest in scenes of extraordinary savagery.
