Tanzania Safari Accommodations
Overview
Choosing the right safari accommodation is a key part of planning your African adventure. Your lodge or camp is more than just a place to rest — it’s where you greet the day to the sounds of nature, spot wildlife from your veranda, and unwind after extraordinary game drives. It’s also where you enjoy most of your meals, making your accommodation an integral part of the overall safari experience.
At Marvels of Africa, we handpick safari lodges and camps that strike the perfect balance between comfort, location, safety, and authenticity. This guide walks you through the different accommodation options, what you can expect during your stay, and how we help you select the ideal choice for your journey.
Types of Safari Accommodations
Safari accommodation in Tanzania generally falls into two main categories: tented camps and lodges. Both offer memorable experiences, and the right choice depends on your travel style, comfort expectations, and how immersed you’d like to be in the wilderness.
Tented Camps
ented camps provide an authentic and immersive safari experience, placing you closer to nature while still offering excellent comfort. These camps are permanent or semi-permanent, featuring spacious canvas tents set on raised platforms and furnished with proper beds and private en-suite bathrooms.
Many travellers are pleasantly surprised by the level of comfort on offer. Depending on the camp, you may enjoy private verandas, outdoor showers, and sweeping views over the savannah, rivers, or wildlife corridors. Falling asleep to the sounds of the African bush is often a highlight of staying in a tented camp.
Tented camps are ideal for travellers who value:
- •A close connection to nature
- •The sights and sounds of wildlife after dark
- •A classic and authentic safari atmosphere
Lodges
Safari lodges in Tanzania are permanent structures built from stone, wood, or brick, offering a more traditional lodge or hotel-style experience. They typically feature comfortable rooms, generous communal spaces, swimming pools, and a wider range of on-site facilities.
While lodge rooms are not always larger than tented camp accommodations, lodges provide a greater sense of solidity and familiarity, making them especially appealing to travellers who prefer a more conventional setting alongside their safari adventure.
Lodges are well suited for travellers who prefer:
- •A solid, permanent structure
- •Comfortable shared spaces and added facilities
- •A familiar, hotel-style environment
Both lodges and tented camps are available across all accommodation levels in Tanzania — from deluxe to ultra-luxury — ensuring there’s an option to suit every travel style and budget.
Safari Accommodation Categories
At Marvels of Africa, we curate safari accommodations into three distinct categories, each offering an exceptional standard of comfort and service. The differences lie primarily in design, exclusivity, and the level of refinement — not in quality.
Deluxe
Deluxe accommodations consist of thoughtfully selected lodges and camps that deliver comfort, reliability, and excellent value. They offer all essential amenities and warm hospitality, making them ideal for first-time safari travellers or those seeking a well-balanced experience without excess.
Premium
Premium accommodations elevate the safari experience through refined design, superior comfort, and often more desirable locations within or close to national parks. With enhanced service levels and greater attention to detail, these properties strike the perfect balance between authenticity and sophistication.
Luxury
Luxury safari accommodations represent the pinnacle of safari living. Set in prime wildlife locations, these exclusive properties offer exceptional privacy, personalised service, elegant interiors, and outstanding cuisine. Every element is carefully crafted to deliver a truly immersive and indulgent safari experience.
Across all categories, safety, cleanliness, and service excellence are never compromised — ensuring every Marvels of Africa journey meets the highest standards.
Location Matters
In Tanzania, where you stay is as important as where you go. From secluded lodges set deep within national parks to elegant retreats overlooking vast wilderness landscapes, safari accommodation plays a defining role in your journey.
At Marvels of Africa, we curate exceptional lodges and camps across Tanzania’s most celebrated safari destinations — balancing location, exclusivity, comfort, and seamless wildlife access.
Our Approach to Planning Your Safari
When designing your Tanzania safari itinerary, we carefully consider seasonality, wildlife movements, park and concession fees, driving times, and overall value. This thoughtful planning ensures you enjoy the best possible safari experience — perfectly balanced between comfort, access, and cost.
Meals and Drinks
Most safari lodges and camps operate on a Full Board basis, which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meals are freshly prepared and can accommodate a variety of dietary preferences when communicated in advance.
Tea, coffee, and filtered drinking water are generally included throughout your stay. In some properties, bottled or packed drinking water may be available at an additional cost.
Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages are usually charged separately unless you are staying at an all-inclusive safari property.
Hotels in Arusha typically operate on a Bed & Breakfast basis, while safari lodges and camps are almost always Full Board. At Marvels of Africa, we clearly outline all inclusions ahead of time, ensuring complete transparency and no surprises during your journey.
Power, Wi-Fi, and Connectivity
Many safari lodges and camps in Tanzania are powered primarily by solar energy, often supplemented by generators, as part of their commitment to sustainability. As a result, electricity may be available only at set times, particularly overnight in more remote locations.
Charging points (Type G) are typically available in guest rooms or shared areas, though power output can be limited. We recommend carrying power banks to keep essential devices charged during game drives and excursions.
Wi-Fi is offered at most safari lodges and camps, but connectivity can be slow or intermittent, especially in remote regions such as the Serengeti, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro. Internet access is usually concentrated in main lodge buildings and common areas rather than individual rooms.
Mobile network coverage varies across Tanzania. Vodacom provides the most reliable service, with Airtel as a secondary option. Coverage is generally strong near major towns and in parts of popular safari circuits, but may be limited or unavailable in remote wilderness areas.
For the best chance of staying connected, we recommend purchasing a local Vodacom SIM card or eSIM, which is readily available upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. That said, many travellers welcome the opportunity to disconnect and fully immerse themselves in the tranquillity of the African wilderness during their safari.
Drinking Water and Laundry
Full Board accommodations provide a limited daily supply of drinking water.
All-Inclusive properties typically offer unlimited drinking water along with a selection of included beverages.
Marvels of Africa provides unlimited drinking water for all guests throughout their safari, regardless of the accommodation’s standard inclusions.
Laundry services are commonly available at safari camps and lodges. Laundry may be included in the stay or charged separately, depending on the property.
Rooms, Families, and Special Requests
Safari accommodations typically offer a variety of room configurations, including:
- Single Room / Tent
- Double Room / Tent
- Twin Room / Tent
- Triple Room / Tent
- Family or inter-connecting rooms / Tent
Family tents and family rooms are available at selected properties. These often involve an additional per-person supplement, reflecting the larger space, extra beds, and enhanced services provided. We will always clearly communicate any such supplements at the time of planning, so there are no surprises.
If you are traveling as a family, celebrating a special occasion, or have specific requirements, please let us know in advance. We work closely with our lodge partners to accommodate requests wherever possible.
Safety at Safari Lodges
Many safari lodges and camps are unfenced, allowing wildlife to move freely through the area. This is a normal and safe part of the safari experience.
To ensure guest safety:
- Trained guards escort guests after dark
- Staff provide safety briefings on arrival
- Simple rules are followed, such as not walking alone at night
Safari staff are highly experienced, and safety is always a top priority.
If You Experience Any Issues
While safari accommodations aim to provide exceptional service, occasional issues can arise.
If you experience any concerns during your stay:
Inform the lodge or camp management immediately so they can address the issue on the spot
Contact the Marvels of Africa team for further assistance
We are always available to support you and will work quickly to ensure your safari experience remains smooth and enjoyable.
